Hey Y'all, sorry I've been MIA for a while. The Semester has come to a close and the craziness of working all summer as well as taking a summer class and everything else I have to do has commenced. My brother also got married on May 21st, so I have a sister (FINALLY!!!). I've had some ideas brewing in my head about what to talk about, and since I realized I haven't written a blog post this month yet, I figured it was time to stop brewing and start writing. It's not going to be my longest post ever but I hope I make the point I'm aiming towards. I was thinking the other day about the difference between being popular and being known and if there was a difference. What do you think . . . is there one? Feel free to leave a comment and weigh in =] When I was growing up, I was never the popular kid. I was okay with that, but of course, popular kids always seem to be noticed by the right people. Youisknow, those people that you want to notice you? Whether it was a teacher, a crush, even parents - you know that feeling inside of you I'm talking about. Being popular is of course not always a good thing or desired by the popular-ians, some say they don't choose the popular life rather it chooses them.
Being a pastor's kid, I've always been known by, well, basically everyone who attended whatever church we were at and who knew my parents (which seems like everyone who is living on earth presently...). I would joke that the entire congregation knew me but I didn't know most of them. Maybe it was because my dad would use stories about me (and my family) in his sermons at times, or maybe it was simply because I was part of the pastor's family. Regardless, a lot of people knew me. Because of that, I felt "known" by many. Being known is more along the lines of recognition. So how is being popular different than being known? Well, neither are on a personal level. But while popular is people noticing you, I think being known is recognizing you. The difference is - according to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary - being noticed is "polite or favorable attention" while recognizing is "to know and remember because of previous knowledge or experience." Of course there are other ways to look at these words, but the dictionary explains what I had trouble putting into words. If you had to pick for the past, present, or even the future, would you rather be popular or known? For This Time, Cambria
